Matthew McGowen - General Counsel and Land Manager

Matthew H. McGowen is a Board Certified Oil, Gas, and Mineral Law attorney with nearly two decades of experience in energy transactions, development, and asset management across the United States.

Immediately prior to joining Active Iron Energy, Matt served as Senior Counsel at Marathon Oil Company, where he led multibillion-dollar acquisitions, mergers, and strategic joint ventures.

Throughout his career at Marathon, Chevron, and leading energy law firms, Matt has negotiated and closed complex upstream and midstream deals, supported large-scale asset development, and structured partnerships with private equity and institutional investors. His expertise spans asset evaluation, commercial negotiations, due diligence, and risk mitigation for high-value energy investments.

Matt earned his Juris Doctor, magna cum laude, from Texas Tech University School of Law and his Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance, cum laude, from Texas A&M University. He is licensed by the State Bar of Texas and admitted to practice in multiple federal districts.
